The prequel to the classic
Radio 4 Science-Fiction drama.
Arama - a great domed city encased in rock, deep beneath the surface. Generation after generation of people have gone about their lives in a world of finite space and infinite resources - never pondering the many inconistencies around them. They have been taught not to.
To them there is only Arama... and Diablo - the evil land against which they fight an eternal war. And the outdoors? Well, that's just a myth. Something to frighten children. A threat for those who disobey the Guardian of Destiny. No one questions why things are as they are. No one wonders if there could be something more.
Until now...

"Big Finish Productions are proud to announce the completion of recording on Earthsearch: Mindwarp, James Follett's prequel to his classic 80's sci-fi radio drama Earthsearch.
Recorded the 8th/9th/10th September 2000, the three CD release stars Leon Parris as Ewen and India Fisher as Jenine (Charley Pollard in the upcoming Big Finish Paul McGann audio's) as well as guest starring Colin Baker and Nicholas Courtney.
The original Earthsearch series was the second most successful BBC radio serial ever (after The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy) winning many awards and being translated into over 30 different languages. Earthsearch: Mindwarp is scheduled for release in May 2001. "

Jason Haigh-Ellery of Big Finish Productions, the producer of the CD dramatised audio version of Mindwarp, tells me that it will consist of three-CD's

This is from the Tape/Cd notes that Jim has given me
MINDWARP CD INTRODUCTION.
Do you remember the title sequence in that remarkable TV series "The Prisoner" in which an enraged Patrick McGoohan stormed into an office and slammed down his resignation? The guy sitting behind the desk was the late George Markstein, the series' initial script editor -- a gifted storyteller, novelist, and a master of indirection whom I had the good fortune to get to know when I joined the literary agency that he founded with Jacqui Lyons.

"Mindwarp" was one of my sketchy ideas dating from those early days with George and he loved it. We spent happy hours over endless cups of tea and coffee shaping rough story lines and I still have his notes. The trouble was I didn't have a reason for the existence of the strange society that was the very cornerstone of "Mindwarp". "Don't worry," George said. "The reason is there, just waiting. When it finally ambushes you it'll be so blindingly obvious that you'll wonder why younever saw it in the first place."
He was right, the "blindingly obvious" reason was there all the time but, sadly, I didn't see it until after his untimely death. Mindwarp is the logical curtain-raiser to "Earthsearch" -- the science-fiction serials I wrote for BBC Radio 4 in the early 1980s. I was so excited that rather than await the outcome of protracted negotiations for a new Radio 4 series, I got straight down and wrote "Mindwarp" in novel form -- which is a good way of getting a story pinned down on paper. After Severn House published "Mindwarp" in 1994 I realised that adapting it for sound was going to be tougher than I imagined so I kept putting it off.
Thankfully Big Finish are made of sterner stuff and this is their excellent result: an audio version of "Mindwarp" -- the way it was meant to be.
