Synopsis
HANS : I couldn't believe it. When I reached the corner of my street I just
stood still... It had hardly been bombed. Nothing to bomb, I suppose. Just a
few rows of back to back houses.
There were gaps like missing teeth. Fireplaces
and wallpaper high up on the side of shored-up houses. It was like a dream.
I felt that if I moved it would all disappear and I'd be back at Colchester.
The year 1946. The place East Berlin. The speaker an escaped German POW. In
less than a year he was back at Colchester.
